People living with dementia in Suffolk have been participating in a project designed to help with their well-being through voice recordings and photos. The project was delivered by Chronicle Community Stories CIC thanks to funding from the Let’s Talk Dementia Fund, provided by Communities Together East Anglia.
The project has created 12 personalised “Snapshot Memory Boxes” so far, and achieved overwhelmingly positive feedback from Care Home residents, families and staff. The project has highlighted the potential of simple, person-centered tools to improve emotional well-being in dementia care.

The personalised Snapshot Memory Boxes combine short voice recordings from family and friends with a photo. The Boxes are designed to lift mood, reduce isolation, and strengthen emotional connections.
Key findings from the trial included:
• Residents rated their enjoyment at an average of 9.6 out of 10 with comments such as “I was thrilled”, “I enjoyed it a lot” and “I use it every time I go into my room”;
• Participants reported feeling:
o “Happy”
o “Comforted and happier”
o “Relaxed and contented”
Care Home Management also reported that the Boxes contributed positively to residents’ emotional well-being and quality of life.
“Many times, when residents have become restless or upset the carers have been able to play the memory boxes and this has had a very positive outcome.”
The project also showed that Snapshot Boxes can bring comfort to families:
“For the times she feels distressed and upset when we can't be there in person, she has part of us with her”.
The responses highlight the powerful role that recordings of familiar voices can help in dementia care.
A simple idea with meaningful impact
As the UK continues to explore better ways to support people living with dementia, solutions like Chronicle’s Snapshot Memory Box clearly demonstrate how small, personalised interventions can make a positive difference at a modest cost.
Chronicle hopes the project will pave the way for a wider roll-out of Snapshot Memory Boxes across other care settings, inspiring more families to capture voices and stories that bring comfort and connection to people living with dementia.
